This is a fabulous story of Gustav and his relationships with his jewish parents. The story starts with Gustav flying back into the United States and meeting his mother at the airport on a trip to the lake house in upstate New York. On the way he takes a wrong turn (for which he gets deeply criticized by his mother, which she does about everything he does or says) and they end up on a bridge over the Hudson. In the middle of the bridge there is an accident and they are stuck for hours. During this incident he begins to process with flashbacks his relationship with his father and how it has impacted all his life. Then he looks over the bridge and seems a huge image of his father laying in the river. His mom can see the image also and as he tries to process his mother pushes him further and further into feelings of despair. I loved the writing until the last section in which the author takes the whole development of his writing and simplifies it into two paragraphs of very abrupt writing which seems insulting to me or fearful of his writing capabilities. He should have left it more abstract and trusted his writing and the readers ability to understand the nature of the story.Doubleday Book Club Book Review
